Student community
The Smart Finance student community
I founded this student group because finance is easier to learn with other people in the room. We meet to understand how money works — personal finance included — we visit the Mexican Stock Exchange, we run talks and workshops, and we volunteer for our community and the environment. I lead it, and it keeps growing.
What we do
Three lines of work, and every member ends up touching all three.
-
Visits to the Mexican Stock Exchange
We go to the Bolsa Mexicana de Valores to see up close the place the headlines talk about. It is one thing to read that “the market fell”; it is another to stand in the building where those orders are matched and ask the people who work there how it actually happens.
-
Finance talks and workshops
Short sessions on finance and personal finance: one idea at a time, in plain words, with the numbers in pesos. A workshop means you leave with something done — your own budget, your own calculation — not just with notes.
-
Volunteering
We also do work that has nothing to do with returns: activities that benefit our community and the environment. Part of the point of the group is that finance is a tool for something, and that the something is bigger than us.
What a session looks like
- One topic per session, explained from zero. Nobody is expected to arrive knowing anything.
- Numbers in pesos, on real examples, so the idea lands on something you recognize.
- Questions out loud, at any point. The dumb question is the one everyone else also has.
- Sometimes we leave the room: a visit to the stock exchange, a volunteering day.
Who it is for
High school and university students, whatever they are studying. You do not need to know anything about finance to walk in — the sessions start from zero, which is exactly where I started. If you are already investing, you will still find people to argue with about it.
Next activities
There is no date published right now. When the next visit, workshop or volunteering day is set, it shows up here first and goes out in the newsletter.
How to join
Message me on LinkedIn and I will tell you when the next session is and how to come. There is no sign-up form for the group yet: the newsletter is the way to hear about each new activity, and it takes an email and one click.
